The Silk is my first short film which will be co-directed with Clare Burgess in March 2011. It is a screen adaptation of the wonderful Joy Cowley story about an old couple whose lives (and deaths) are changed forever by a beautiful piece of silk that has been sitting in their cupboard for 50 years.

We have a wonderful cast and crew on board and I can’t wait to shoot it. Details to follow soon…

Screenwriting

While I enjoy creative writing, I have also gained a lot of experience as a screen writer. Credits include comedies ‘Font’ (SABC) and ‘Coconuts’ (Mnet) award-winning South African drama, ‘Hard Copy’, kids show ‘Emu’. I also researched and wrote the script for National Geographic docco ‘Desert Lake Venture I&II’

I have completed one feature script ‘Sitting Duck’, and am polishing my next, an outrageous cage fighting comedy ‘Boxing Chicks’ – watch this space for more on that.

Most exciting, is Joy Cowley’s wonderful short story ‘The Silk’, which I adapted for the screen. It will be shot in March 2011, directed by myself and Clare Burgess. See ‘Directing’ for more details.

This was my first lead role in a New Zealand accent. Apparently very successful! Debuted January 2011 TVNZ Sunday Theatre.

An award-winning drama based on the true story of a South African-born psychiatrist who committed what he believed was the perfect murder.

The philandering Dr Colin Bouwer employed his medical knowledge – over a period of months late in 1999 and early 2000 – to systematically poison his wife Annette (Nathalie Boltt) using insulin.

Bloodlines and its cast have received excellent reviews and critical acclaim.

The break out hit of 2009! This Hollywood blockbuster grossed over $115 million at the box office and was nominated for Academy, Golden Globe, BAFTA awards and more.
This gritty flick about an extraterrestrial race forced to live in slum-like conditions in South Africa, was in fact shot in and around my hometown, Johannesburg. However, it was all put together at Weta, Peter Jackson’s post-production house in Wellington, New Zealand – where I’m now based. Lucky for me I was in the right place at the right time (with the right accent) when they decided to carry on shooting down under. Enter sociologist Sarah Linvingston, played by Nathalie Boltt.

Inspector George Gently

All the way to Ireland for this one! Shot in a quaint little fishing village outside Dublin, I played Trudi Schmeikel alongside the lovely Martin Shaw (Judge John Deed) in the second episode of what has gone on to be an award nominated series. In ‘Bomber’s Moon’, it’s only been 20 years since the end of the war and there is still a good deal of anti-German sentiment in England. Sent in to investigate the death of an ex- POW , Inspector George Gently and his side-kick Bacchus, discover that the dead man’s son and daughter-in-law, Trudi (Nathalie Boltt) are lying to the police.

Filmed in freezing Ireland.

Ella Blue

I played the title role in “Ella Blue, a tale of love and survival in the time of apartheid-ruled South Africa. Directed by Oscar-nominated Darrell James Roodt (“Yesterday” – Best Foreign Film), this moody miniseries won Best Drama at Seoul Awards 2008.

Set in the turbulent 1960s, “Ella Blue” turns back the clock to a time in South Africa when mixed race citizens could have members of the same family classified as ‘white’ for having green eyes and ‘black’ for having curly hair. Political officials had the power to tear families apart on a whim, sending ‘black’ siblings away from their families to live in squalid townships for the rest of their lives. ‘Ella Blue’ was shot in Kassiesbaai, in the Western Cape of South Africa. Members of the local community there remember these terrible times and formed a large part of the cast.

Doomsday

Starring Golden Globe winner, Bob Hoskins, with Nathalie Boltt as commander Jane Harris in a virus-infested futuristic London, this brutal action-horror was shot in Cape Town and directed by splat-pack star Neil Marshall (The Descent)

Loads of fun with a fantastic cast, director and producer. Horror films, it hast to be said, while gruesome to watch, are hilarious to make! Cars covered in skin! Walls covered in brains! Hooharr!

BTW. Bob Hoskins is a most kind, and friendly soul. No VIP trailer for him – he preferred hanging out having a ciggie and cuppa with commoners…like me : )

Funny thing about making movies …you make friends -and funny movies. An enduring friendship with Poseidon director John Putch (Scrubs, Cougar Town, Ugly Betty), lead me all the way to Pennsylvania to play Mandy, the tour guide with a soft spot for singing, beer and Jenni Wade (the only civilian killed in the Civil War – by a bullet to the butt).

Winner of 15 festival awards, this indie comedy brought together a bunch of fun-loving friends-of-the-Putch including Dana Delany (the smokin’, cussin’ Amish girl), Curtis Armstrong (who’s not so keen to get his privates on his wife”s internet porn site), Kevin Rahm (chased by a cloven-hoofed demon) and many more. Another fab shoot in Cape Town with an amazing international cast many from the UK (Sir Tom Courtenay, David Suchet, Joanne Whalley). I played Kate, the sister of leading man Rob, played by the ever-charming Robert Carlyle. Tony Mitchell directed this action-packed thriller about a raging storm that coincides with high seas, unleashing a colossal tidal surge, which travels down England’s East Coast, into the Thames Estuary and into the city. The lives of millions of Londoners are at stake. Top marine engineers have only a few hours to save them.
